A group of seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for attacks on locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
