Individuals who endured sexual abuse by church officials have expressed fresh optimism after their initial encounter with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

The board president, heading Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the pontiff's decision to engage with them so soon in his papacy sent a strong message about his commitment to addressing the issue.

Global Strict Policy Pushed

The organization is advocating for a global zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any priest who confesses to or is proven of abusing a child. This approach has already been adopted in the US.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "resistance in certain regions of the globe" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is resistance," they stated.

Legacy Challenge

The new Pope, who took the role in spring, has inherited this persistent problem that has haunted the Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to resolve the situation included an historic summit on paedophilia within the Church and changes to canon law to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Deeply Felt Link

For the representative, who prefers they/them pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the policy is deeply meaningful. The Canadian activist revealed they were abused by a clergy member who was subsequently transferred between different parishes.

"We trust this will set the tone for his leadership, because we want to collaborate with him," Hickey expressed. "We have the common objective, we want to end clergy abuse."

Significant Encounter

Seven representatives of the organization, which represents survivors and advocates from over thirty nations, met with the Pontiff in his Vatican office.

The meeting, originally scheduled for 20 minutes, extended to a sixty minutes, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was described as "very understanding" when listening to the story of a female survivor victimized at a Catholic residential school for native youth in Canada.

Hickey added the leader was "compassionate" about their own story and appeared "modest, humorous, and very down to earth."

"Survivors have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," Hickey stated. "I felt like he was sincere, practical, and very open and eager to collaborate with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The group is hoping that revisions to church regulations will enable the implementation of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have consulted experts and gathered materials that they will submit to the pontiff.

"He appeared interested in reviewing it," they noted.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recent church-ordered document highlighted the "importance of a efficient process for the resignation and/or removal of religious officials or personnel in cases of misconduct or failure to act."

The report also noted that victims repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for church leaders and senior officials to be made responsible for negligence and cover-up."

Moving Forward

The representative shared they informed the Pope at the beginning of their meeting: "This is as much a risk for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the encounter, Hickey voiced hope for future change.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, coming together and building a connection and continuing to build that relationship is a step in the correct path," Hickey stated.

Hickey added that they told with the pontiff: "Just because it's a difficult period, I feel like we can change how the narrative ends - he valued that."
